ChatGPT Apple Health guide

ChatGPT has Apple Health. When do you still need MCP?

If you are eligible and only want Apple Health inside ChatGPT, use the native connection. Choose Somvia when you need structured workout data in Codex, Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, or another MCP client.

Option 1: Health in ChatGPT

OpenAI launched Health in ChatGPT on July 23, 2026. It can connect Apple Health directly and use relevant information in conversations when you allow it. If your whole workflow stays in ChatGPT, this is the best place to start.

Health is rolling out to eligible, logged-in users age 18 or older in the United States on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. It is supported on web and iOS, while connecting Apple Health requires an iPhone. See OpenAI's current Health in ChatGPT guide for availability and data controls.

  1. Open Health in ChatGPT

Open Health from the ChatGPT sidebar or More menu, then select Connect Health or Get started.

  2. Select Apple Health

On iPhone, choose Apple Health and follow the permission flow for the categories you want to share.

  3. Wait for the initial sync

Syncing may take a few minutes or longer for a large history. Once it finishes, ChatGPT can use the connected context when relevant and permitted.

Current boundary: OpenAI says Health is not supported in Codex at this time. A ChatGPT Health connection does not make the same data available to Codex or another MCP client.

Option 2: Somvia remote MCP

Somvia solves a different problem. It syncs the Apple Health measurements you select to an account-protected remote MCP endpoint, with explicit read-only tools for daily trends, workout sessions, splits, and available time series. You can connect that endpoint to Codex, Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, and other compatible clients.

You can also use Somvia inside ChatGPT when your workspace supports custom MCP apps. This path is not available to every consumer account: as of July 27, 2026, OpenAI documents developer mode and MCP apps for Business, Enterprise, and Edu customers on ChatGPT web. See the current official developer-mode guide.

Using Somvia inside ChatGPT

  1. Prepare Somvia

Install Somvia on iPhone, sign in with Apple, activate Pro, authorize selected Health categories, then open Connection from Today or Settings, turn on Sync to the Somvia server, and let the first sync finish. Upload is off by default, and ChatGPT can only retrieve data that has reached your Somvia account.

  2. Enable ChatGPT developer mode

A workspace admin or owner enables developer mode according to the Business or Enterprise/Edu controls documented by OpenAI.

  3. Create the MCP app

In Workspace Settings or user Settings, open Apps → Create and provide:

    https://somvia.app/mcp
  4. Scan tools and authenticate

Choose the OAuth authentication path. ChatGPT opens Somvia's Sign in with Apple flow, then scans the read-only health tools.

  5. Enable the app in a chat

Select the resulting development or workspace app for a conversation, then ask a bounded question using Somvia.

Which path should you choose?

NeedBetter starting point
Use Apple Health only inside ChatGPT with the least setupNative Health in ChatGPT, when available
Use your selected Apple Health data from CodexSomvia, because native Health is not supported in Codex
Reuse one Apple Health endpoint across several MCP clientsSomvia
Ask explicit questions about workout lists, splits, and available seriesSomvia
Avoid maintaining another health-data serviceNative Health in ChatGPT
Use a headless agent such as Hermes or OpenClaw with a tokenSomvia

If ChatGPT Health already answers your questions, keep using it. Somvia earns the extra setup when you need a reusable MCP connection, a non-ChatGPT client, or explicit workout structure. It does not bypass ChatGPT's plan or workspace controls.

Prompts for the Somvia MCP path

  • Use Somvia to compare my sleep duration and HRV over the last two weeks.
  • List my latest running workouts and compare pace, average heart rate, and splits.
  • Inspect the available heart-rate and speed series for my most recent interval run.

Keep the data boundaries distinct

Native Health in ChatGPT is governed by OpenAI's Health data controls. The Somvia path first stores selected data in your Somvia account, then sends requested tool results to ChatGPT when you enable and use the app. Disconnecting one service does not automatically delete data in the other.

In Somvia, you can change iOS Health permissions, refresh headless-agent tokens, or delete the Somvia account and synced data. ChatGPT conversations and connected-app settings remain managed in ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT connect directly to Apple Health?

Yes. Health is rolling out to eligible, logged-in ChatGPT users age 18 or older in the United States on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. Connecting Apple Health requires an iPhone.

Should I use ChatGPT Health or Somvia?

Use native Health if you only need Apple Health inside ChatGPT and it is available to you. Choose Somvia when you need one structured remote MCP endpoint across Codex, Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, and other compatible clients, or when you need explicit workout and time-series tools.

Can Codex use Apple Health?

OpenAI says Health is not currently supported in Codex. Somvia exposes selected Apple Health data through a remote MCP endpoint that Codex can connect to.

Can every ChatGPT user add Somvia as a custom MCP app?

No. OpenAI currently documents custom MCP developer mode for Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces on the web. Availability and setup may change as the feature rolls out.
