Option 1: Claude's built-in Health access
The Claude iPhone app can read Apple Health directly. Ask a question about your health or training, and Claude shows the iOS Health permission screen the first time. It reads activity, workouts, heart rate, resting heart rate, HRV, sleep stages, body measurements, and nutrition, and can answer with charts.
Anthropic documents health features as a beta for Pro and Max plans, limited to users in the United States, as part of Use Claude with iOS apps. Claude can read Health data but cannot write to it. By default, Claude does not save health information to memory. If you qualify and only ask about your health in the iPhone app, this is the least setup.
Option 2: Somvia as a Claude connector
Somvia syncs the Apple Health data you select from your iPhone to your Somvia account, and exposes it as a read-only remote MCP connector. Claude Desktop, Claude on the web, and Claude Code reach it through the same address, and so can ChatGPT, OpenClaw, Hermes, and other MCP clients.
Somvia also calculates scores on the iPhone that Claude reads directly: a morning recovery score, training load for each workout and over time, threshold pace and heart rate, and race predictions. Claude can open a single workout and read its splits and the heart-rate, speed, power, or cadence curves when Apple Health recorded them. Goals, injuries, and training preferences saved as Somvia memories are available in the next conversation and in other clients.
Which path should you choose?
| Need | Better starting point |
|---|---|
| Ask about Apple Health in the Claude iPhone app, on Pro or Max, in the US | Claude's built-in Health access |
| Use Apple Health data in Claude Desktop, Claude on the web, or Claude Code | Somvia |
| You are outside the US, or on a plan without the built-in Health beta | Somvia, if your Claude plan supports custom connectors |
| Ask about workout splits and recorded heart-rate or pace curves | Somvia |
| Read a recovery score, training load, or threshold pace calculated from your history | Somvia |
| Use the same data and memories in ChatGPT, OpenClaw, or Hermes | Somvia |
| Avoid running another service that holds your health data | Claude's built-in Health access |
Before connecting Claude
Install Somvia on iPhone, sign in with Apple, activate Pro, choose the Health categories and history window you want, then open Connection from Today or Settings, turn on Sync to the Somvia server, and let the first sync finish. Upload is off by default, and Claude can only retrieve data that has reached your Somvia account.
Somvia's endpoint is public on the internet but the health tools are not public: every MCP session must authenticate to a specific Somvia user. Claude's remote connector reaches the endpoint from Anthropic's cloud, as described in the official custom connector guide.
Add Somvia to Claude
-
Open Claude's connector settings
For an individual Claude account, go to Customize → Connectors, select +, then choose Add custom connector.
-
Enter the Somvia endpoint
https://somvia.app/mcpNo custom OAuth client ID or secret is required for the standard Somvia setup.
-
Connect and sign in
Find Somvia in the connector list and choose Connect. Claude opens the Somvia authorization flow; complete Sign in with Apple using the same Apple account as the iPhone app.
-
Enable it for the conversation
In a Claude conversation, open the + menu, choose Connectors, and enable Somvia. You can leave it disabled in conversations that do not need health data.
-
Ask a bounded first question
Start with a clear date range, such as “Use Somvia to summarize my sleep and resting heart rate over the last seven days.”
Team and Enterprise workspaces: an Owner or Primary Owner must first add the custom web connector in Organization settings. Individual members then connect and authenticate it for their own accounts.
What Claude can ask Somvia for
| Level | Examples |
|---|---|
| Daily trends | Sleep, HRV, resting heart rate, steps, energy, and other selected measurements |
| Workout discovery | List sessions by local date and activity, then compare duration, distance, pace, energy, and heart rate |
| Workout detail | Read splits and available heart-rate, speed, route, power, cadence, or stroke-rate series |
| Sleep detail | Read authorized sleep stages over bounded date ranges |
Useful first prompts
- Use Somvia to compare my sleep duration and HRV for this week versus last week.
- List my running workouts this month, then compare pace and average heart rate.
- Open my latest interval run and inspect the available splits and heart-rate series.
- Tell me what data is missing before drawing a conclusion.
If the connector does not work
- No Add custom connector option: check your Claude plan and workspace policy. Team and Enterprise users may need an owner to add it first.
- Authorization loops: confirm you use the same Apple account as Somvia and allow the browser to return to Claude.
- Tools connect but return no data: open Somvia, confirm the selected Health categories, Pro status, and the latest successful sync.
- A metric is absent: Apple Health may have no readable sample, or permission may not have been granted. HealthKit deliberately does not disclose which case applies.
Privacy boundaries
Claude can request only the data available through the tools you enabled by connecting Somvia. Somvia's server records activation timestamps such as the first successful connection and first non-empty health read, but not your question, tool arguments, returned health values, or Claude's answer.
Disconnect Somvia in Claude to stop that connector. Delete your Somvia account in the iPhone app to remove synced data and revoke Somvia access tokens. Claude's conversation history is managed separately in Claude.
Frequently asked questions
Can Claude read Apple Health directly?
Yes, in the Claude iPhone app. Anthropic documents health features as a beta for Pro and Max plans, limited to users in the United States. Claude asks for Health permission the first time you ask about your data.
Should I use Claude's built-in Health access or Somvia?
Use the built-in access if you are eligible and only ask about Apple Health in the Claude iPhone app. Somvia is for Claude Desktop, Claude on the web, Claude Code, and other MCP clients, for people outside the built-in feature's region or plans, and for questions that need workout splits, recorded time series, or Somvia's recovery and training-load scores.
Can Claude connect to a remote Apple Health MCP server?
Yes. Claude custom connectors support public remote MCP servers. Somvia provides the endpoint and authenticates each user with Sign in with Apple.
Do I paste a Somvia token into Claude?
No. Claude uses Somvia's OAuth path. Add the endpoint and complete Sign in with Apple when Claude asks you to connect.
Why can I not see Add custom connector?
Availability and administration depend on the Claude plan and workspace. Team and Enterprise organizations require an owner to add the connector before members connect it.
