What a Hyrox block does to you
Hyrox is eight kilometres of running with eight stations in between, and training for it means carrying two kinds of volume at once. The running block on its own looks reasonable. The strength and station work on its own looks reasonable. It is the sum that goes past what you can absorb, and the sum is the number no single logbook shows you.
The other thing a block does is make the running harder to read. Running off a sled push is not the running you do fresh, so the pace on a race simulation says less about fitness than the same pace on a Tuesday run. Progress has to be read from the sessions that were run fresh.
The morning answer
Every morning Somvia gives a recovery score from the night just gone: overnight heart-rate variability against your own usual, resting heart rate against your own usual, last night's sleep, and the load still owed from recent sessions. It reads as a number with a band, and it opens to show which of the four moved it.
That is the answer to the question the plan leaves open. A hard session on a low morning is a choice, and you may still make it, but it is a choice made knowing the cost. Recovery time, shown alongside, is the hours until the load from recent sessions has cleared.
One load across runs and stations
Every workout in Apple Health with a heart-rate record gets a load, whatever type it was saved as. A tempo run, a wall-ball set recorded as Functional Strength Training, and a full simulation saved as Mixed Cardio all reduce to the same scale, and they add up. The week's total is the number a runner's log and a gym log never produce between them.
Two averages of that daily load carry the meaning. Long-term load is the six-week average, what the block has built. This week's volume is the seven-day average, what you are doing right now. When this week runs well ahead of the long-term line for more than a few days, the training state says so in words, and the word is the one to act on.
How sessions arrive. Apple Watch has no Hyrox workout type. Simulations usually land as Mixed Cardio, station work as Functional Strength Training, and the runs as runs. Somvia scores each from heart rate, so the label does not change the load. What it needs is heart rate on the session, which an Apple Watch records by default.
Whether the running is getting faster
Threshold pace and threshold heart rate are estimated from your sustained hard efforts, and Somvia charts them over months. Cardio fitness, the estimate of maximal oxygen uptake, and heart-rate recovery after a run sit beside them. Read together across a block they say whether the running side is moving, independent of how the last simulation felt.
The one-kilometre runs inside a simulation are short and interrupted, so they mostly feed load rather than the threshold estimate. Tempo runs and intervals run fresh are what move it, which is one more reason to keep them in the plan.
The early warning
Overreaching shows up in the mornings before it shows up in the sessions. Resting heart rate a few beats above your usual for several days in a row, or overnight HRV sitting below your usual range, are the signals, and Somvia raises a card on the Today screen when either drifts from your own baseline. The comparison is to you, not to a population figure, because there is no single right number for either.
What Somvia does not do
It is not a Hyrox plan and does not replace one. It does not analyse stations, and it does not predict a Hyrox finish time: race predictions cover 5K to the marathon and come from your running. It reads Apple Health, so a session that lives only inside another app and was never written to Health is not seen.
Questions
Does Apple Watch have a Hyrox workout type?
No. Most people record a Hyrox session or simulation as Mixed Cardio or Functional Strength Training, and the stations in a gym class often land as Functional Strength Training on their own. Somvia scores a session from its heart-rate record whatever type it was saved as, so the load is counted either way.
Can Somvia read the sessions from my Hyrox plan app?
Somvia reads Apple Health, not other apps directly. If your plan app or your watch writes the finished workout to Apple Health with heart rate, it counts. A session that exists only inside another app does not.
Does Somvia predict my Hyrox finish time?
No. Race predictions cover 5K to the marathon and come from your running. There is no Hyrox-specific prediction, and the stations are not analysed one by one. Somvia tells you whether you are recovered, how much load you are carrying, and whether your running threshold is moving.
Will the broken running in a race simulation change my threshold pace?
Mostly it adds load. Threshold pace is estimated from sustained hard efforts, and the one-kilometre runs between stations are short and interrupted. Your dedicated runs, especially tempo and interval sessions, are what move the threshold estimate.
