The comparison
Each row comes from the sources listed under how this page was checked. A cell lists what that app's own pages describe. A dash means those pages do not mention the feature.

How to choose
No app on this list is best for everyone. Start from what you want to do with the number.
- One clear answer each morning and a target for the day: Athlytic pairs Recovery with a daily exertion range and suggests today's workout. Training Today gives one Readiness to Train score and runs on the watch without the iPhone nearby.
- Many scores in one app, with nutrition and strength logging: Bevel covers recovery, sleep, strain, stress, nutrition and strength, and all of these are free. Bevel Pro adds the AI coach, health records, biological age and training plans. Bevel also lists Oura and Garmin among the devices it works with.
- Less pressure and rest days that count: Gentler Streak is built around balance between activity and rest, and keeps all analysis on the iPhone.
- Triathlon sessions and a coach on TrainingPeaks: Training Today suggests swim, bike and run workouts and shares readiness with TrainingPeaks. It also has the lowest lifetime price here, $59.99.
- Race training with threshold pace, critical power or race predictions: Somvia estimates these from Apple Watch runs and rides.
- You want the strongest AI model, and to know which one it is: Somvia runs no language model of its own. Claude, ChatGPT or any agent you connect over MCP answers with the model you selected there, within your own plan's limits, and it only changes when you change it. When a stronger model comes out, switch to it and that model reads your training. Athlytic can export its results as a file to share with an AI assistant.
What Somvia does not do
Somvia is made by the publisher of this page, so its gaps are listed here too.
- No workout suggestions, plans or structured workouts sent to the watch. Athlytic, Bevel, Training Today and Gentler Streak all suggest workouts.
- No all-day stress score, energy battery or nutrition tracking.
- No free tier for the scores. The app is free to install, and Pro unlocks the analysis.
- An agent can read your data only after you turn on upload in the app. Upload is off by default.
- The recovery score, threshold pace and race predictions depend on Apple Watch data. Other watches that write to Apple Health usually lack overnight HRV and speed series, so fewer scores are available. The method page lists what each score needs.
What about Garmin?
Garmin's Training Readiness is a well-known recovery score, but it is not an option on an Apple Watch. Garmin calculates it on compatible Garmin watches from sleep score, recovery time, HRV status, acute load, and recent sleep and stress history. The Garmin Connect app pairs with Garmin devices.
The other direction is partly possible. Garmin Connect can sync workouts and some health data to Apple Health, but not HRV, so apps on this page that need overnight HRV, including Athlytic and Somvia, cannot calculate a recovery score from a Garmin watch. Bevel connects to Garmin directly.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best recovery app for Apple Watch?
It depends on what you want next to the morning score. Athlytic pairs Recovery with a daily exertion target. Bevel adds strain, stress, nutrition and an AI coach, and its daily scores are free. Training Today gives one Readiness to Train score with triathlon workouts and TrainingPeaks sharing. Gentler Streak suits people who want rest days to count and less pressure. Somvia adds threshold pace and heart rate, critical power and race predictions, and lets Claude, ChatGPT and other agents read the same numbers through MCP.
What are the best Athlytic alternatives?
Bevel, Training Today, Gentler Streak and Somvia all read Apple Watch data from Apple Health. Bevel is the closest in scope, and its daily scores are free. Training Today costs $2.95 a month or $59.99 once. Gentler Streak focuses on balance between activity and rest. Somvia matches Athlytic's $29.99 annual price and adds threshold, critical power, race predictions and agent access over MCP.
Which Apple Watch recovery app works with ChatGPT or Claude?
As of October 19, 2026, Somvia is the only one of these five with a remote MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, OpenClaw, Hermes and other MCP clients can read its scores and workout detail after you turn on upload. Athlytic can export Recovery, Exertion, Training Load, Sleep and workouts as a file to give to an AI assistant. Athlytic, Bevel and Training Today also have AI features inside their own apps.
Which AI model does Somvia use?
None of its own, so the choice is yours. When you ask about your training, the agent you connect, such as Claude, ChatGPT, OpenClaw or Hermes, answers with the model you selected in it, and you can switch to a stronger model as soon as one is available. An app with its own AI picks the model for you. With Somvia you know which model reads your data, and it only changes when you change it. The scores themselves are calculated on the iPhone with published formulas, and Somvia's server does not call a language model. Somvia has no AI allowance or credits, so how much you ask depends only on your own AI plan.
Is there a free recovery app for Apple Watch?
Bevel's free plan includes Recovery, Sleep, Strain, Stress, training load and nutrition tracking, and Pro adds its AI coach. Training Today's free version shows the current Readiness to Train score, recent readiness history, sleep and resting heart rate. Gentler Streak is free to download, and Premium adds the 10-day and 30-day Activity Path, daily workout suggestions and full sleep analysis. Athlytic offers one week free, and Somvia offers a three-day trial before a subscription.
Does Garmin Training Readiness work with an Apple Watch?
No. Garmin calculates Training Readiness on compatible Garmin watches from their own sleep, HRV, recovery time and load data, and the Garmin Connect app pairs with Garmin devices. An Apple Watch user needs an app that reads Apple Health instead.
